Like any year, 2018 included a variety of new trends, movies, and internet sensations throughout the year. Each month of 2018 presented a new hot topic that everyone knew about. Here is a month-by-month review of 2018, and the trends that came with it:
January
The Tide Pod trend kicked off the first upcoming trends of the year. In 2012, Tide Pods were created by P&G with the intentions of enabling laundry to become easier and fresh for all. Tide Pods are filled with chemicals that are not meant for human consumption, but in January 2018, children hopped on the “Tide Pod Challenge.”.YouTuber TheAaronSwan669 started the trend when he posted a video of him consuming Tide Pods. This video gained a great ordeal of attention throughout the youtube community, as other YouTubers filmed videos of their own “Tide Pod Challenge.”. Children and teenagers also followed this trend at home and ate Tide Pods. The trend has slowly died down, as stories of illness from eating Tide Pods have gained attention online.
February
The Super Bowl occurs every February, and catches the attention of millions annually. Last year on February 4, the New England Patriots took on the Philadelphia Eagles to claim the win of the LII Super Bowl. Many spectators predicted that the Patriots would win the game, but the Eagles proved to be the underdogs of the year. The Eagles battled throughout the game, and won the game 41-33. Last year’s Super Bowl performance was provided by Justin Timberlake, who put on a show that stole the hearts of many, regardless of the technical issues he faced throughout the performance.
March
As spring slowly approached throughout March, many fashion trends followed. Polka Dots and pastel colored clothing began to work its way into many wardrobes, and continued to throughput the spring. Polka Dots have been the on-and-off fashion trend for many years; in the 1920s, polka dot bathing suits were an essential to one’s summer closet. The trend died off for a little, until it made an appearance in the 1950s.
April
In April, the world welcomed Kate Middleton and Prince William’s third royal child. Louis Arthur Charles was born on April 23 in London. The child is now fifth in line for the British royal throne. Prince Louis goes by the royal title of His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge. The birth of the royal child gained a large amount of attention worldwide, as many people followed the story after the couple announced they were expecting.
May
During May, many people worldwide kept up with Prince Harry’s wedding. Prince Harry married an American actress named Meghan Markle on May 19. The wedding was televised and live streamed for people to watch, and gained lots of attention at the time. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. After the ceremony, the royal family and the community gathered to watch Meghan and Harry ride through the town on a carriage ride, where they then shared their first kiss.
June
To kick off summer, Pixar released the Incredibles 2 movie that became one of the most watched movies of the summer. The long awaited movie is a follow up of the first Incredibles film. The animated movie follows the story of a family of superheroes who try their hardest to live a normal life. When a villain strikes in their hometown, the Incredibles must come together and do what’s needed to protect all. Incredibles 2 has been nominated for the Best Animated Feature award, and is the second highest grossing film of all time.
July
With the release of Drake’s fifth studio album “Scorpion,” a new trending challenge arose. In the album’s song “In My Feelings,”, Drake sings: “Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding? Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me, ‘cus I want you, and I need you, and I’m down for you always.”. These lines of the song became well known throughout the internet, and multiple people were joining the Kiki trend and posting videos of dance routines to the song. Even celebrities like Will Smith, Shay Mitchell, and Odell Beckham Jr. joined the trend.
August
The ‘90s became a popular style in clothing throughout the month of August. Trends like tube tops, oversized T-shirts, and tye dye shirts became common throughout the summer. The color yellow also worked its way into many trends this past summer, such as nail and clothing colors.
September
On September 28, Lil Wayne released his twelfth studio album called “The Carter V”. The album consists of 23 songs featuring a variety of different artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Travis Scott, and many more. With this album, Lil Wayne claimed his fourth No. 1 album according to Billboard. .
October
Halloween comes with its own trends every year, and 2018 came with many. Halloween costume ideas such as characters from The Purge, “Riverdale,” and other well known TV series made appearances throughout Halloween season.
November
On November 22, 2018, spectators gathered in the streets of New York City to watch the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The parade has been a tradition for nearly 100 years, as the first annual gathering occurred in 1924. The Macy’s Day Parade consists of floats, performers, and balloons in a traveling pack that follows a 2.5 mile route through the city. The parade is streamed on NBC, and millions of people tune in to watch the parade. Last year, celebrities like John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Rita Ora performed at the parade.
December
During the last month of the year, Cardi B and Offset reportedly broke up after Offset cheated on her. Cardi posted about the incident, and claims she has no intentions on getting back with her ex. 24-year-old rapper Cardi B posted a video on her instagram announcing the breakup.
“We got a lot of love for each other,” Cardi said. “Things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time.”
Cardi B and Offset had their first and only child, Kulture Kiari Cephus, last July.
