This year’s Bellefonte Gymnastics Team is better than ever as they warm up for the new season of victory.

Previously, the team had placed second in the Bronze Division against Waynesboro, who placed first. Most of the gymnasts will be returning from the year before, and they’re all eager to kick off the season on a great start. Since there are no new seniors this year, some of the juniors will be stepping up to the plate to display their talents and influence the younger teammates.

Every year, the gymnasts have their own personal goals to accomplish before the end of the season. This year’s freshman, Emma Regel, is excited to be on the team, but there are always challenges along the way.

“I’ve come across many challenges. These challenges would be both physical and mental, as gymnastics is a very demanding and harsh sport. The major challenges during a daily practice would include mental blocks, conditioning, and discipline. For example, I’ve had fears of jumping to the bar, doing a back walkover on a beam, front tucking off the beam, and many more,” Emma said.

In addition, the team has set many goals to be accomplished in the future. Grace Sherman, a junior, recalls some of the goals that the team has set, as well as her personal goal.

“This year, the team has accomplished many things. Some of our athletes have gained new skills on bars, floor, and vault. We’ve also won and placed at many new meets that we never have before. Personally, I have only gained new skills on the floor event, but I’m hoping to start on vault next year,” Grace said.

Although the team may experience setbacks along the way, they have had to learn to come together and solve their problems. These problems may include injuries, or even conflicts with others.

“No matter the struggle with coaches, teammates, or even yourself, [it’s important] to never give up on something that means the most to you. This year was the worst when it came to injuries. We had about 3-5 gymnasts with injuries, either at the same time or alone, and it was a struggle trying to see who was physically able to compete for a certain week,” junior Sarah Conner said.

The injuries caused the girls to come together as a team, and according to Sarah, “The team bonding was a way for all of us to keep pushing through the rough season that we had.”

Everyone on the team recognizes their weaknesses, and they strive to become better gymnasts. By accomplishing their goals, the gymnasts can improve their skills for the season ahead and work better as a team. Their hard work truly pays off because it is the stepping stone to success in the future.
