Senior night success

Throughout the years, Bellefonte Area High School has honored its seniors with a Senior Night, usually held before the Friday night football game. All of that changed this year when the football game was cancelled, leaving many upset and concerned.

Friday, October 18, Bellefonte’s usual football game was announced to be cancelled, as a result of the opposing team forfeiting. The Bellefonte Red Raiders were scheduled to play Bishop Carroll, however, due to their lack of players and multiple player injuries, they were unable to play. Although the news was upsetting for the community, Senior Night was still scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. to recognize the football players, cheerleaders, and band members.

Defensive tackle senior Logan Thompson said the football players were, “a little bummed out obviously,” but made the best of the situation.

We decided to be optimistic about it and look at it as an opportunity to get better and take the extra days to practice because we still have a lot of football to play,” he said.

Regardless of the game cancellation, family and supporters of the students still traveled to the field to show their support.

“To get recognition from the community was nice and we were very grateful for all those who came out. We didn’t doubt for a second that the stands wouldn’t be packed because we have one of the most supportive communities and fanbases in the state. Family and friends made sure that it didn’t feel any different from any other Friday night,” Logan said.

Running back senior CJ Funk was also recognized during Senior Night for breaking the school’s record of rushing yards. The record was previously held by Chris Shivery.

The halftime performers were also slightly disappointed, but excited to hear Senior Night would go on.

“When I first heard they were still doing Senior Night I was excited, but I also thought it would just be a short recognition,” senior majorette Kara Mellot said.

“It was nice being able to add more to our senior bios like memories, and thanking the people who have supported us,” Kara added.

Not having the game made it possible for this year’s seniors to be honored for more accomplishments in a unique way.

“It was really nice having a night just for us and what we have accomplished through the years,” senior cheerleader Sarah Conner said. “It was enjoyable, but not as exciting compared to a game night experience. It was really nice to just sit back and watch the band do their thing and have all eyes focused on you for once. It was a great experience.”
