BIG 10 cancellations

It’s Saturday afternoon, which means NCAA football, right? “We are Penn State!” Except you scroll through every channel and there is no Penn State football game on. Everyone knows that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live. No one ever saw the cancellation of sports coming. The NBA made a bubble. The NFL, NHL, and MLB chose testing every game. In college, the SEC, Big 12, and ACC chose to play. However, the Big 10 chose not to participate in any fall sports, according to Bigten.org.

Some people believe this is not the right choice. The Big 10, the conference in which Penn State sports is a member, consulted the Council of the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee to make the decision.

The sports included in these cancellations are: men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. The Big 10 was the first conference to choose to cancel their season. The choice comes after the pandemic swept the nation, and Big 10 officials wanted to protect their players.

According to CBS Sports, some coaches and players are still petitioning to play. Justin Fields, quarterback of the Ohio State Buckeyes, has expressed his intent on playing.

However, some players refuse to play, even if the season gets reinstated. They do not want to risk their health and well-being. Micah Parsons reported in an interview how he felt about a revitalized season.

“I will not play. There is no reason I should risk my career or my life or my family’s life by playing. Yeah, it sucks I can’t play. I love this sport. It’s just too risky,” Parsons said.

There are still players who have hopes of a change of mind from the BIG 10 community. To learn more about the cancellations, go to any source of sports news such as B1G network or ESPN to learn more and stay up to date with all of the B1G news.

The season has since been reinstated by the B1G 10 officials. The season starts on October 24. To follow the regulations and rules set by the conference, you can follow this story at B1G10.com
