The music industry is filled to the brim with categories of all kinds. From country to electronic, from kpop to Beyoncé, the VMAs bring the best of the best to see who dominated the charts and defined the year.

The year 2020 has put an end to many major ceremonies and award shows amidst the global pandemic, but that did not stop MTV from providing a memorable 37th Annual Video Music Awards show. On August 30, The VMAs premiered giving fans their yearly dose of music galore. They are typically filled with live performances and huge audiences, but this year the performances were pre-recorded and shown completely virtually with no live audience. However, this did not hinder these powerhouse artists from providing visually-appealing and show-stopping performances.

This year was a powerful one for female artists, with the rise of female rappers Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion along with the return of icons Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj. Ariana Grande also dominated the show with her performance of “Rain On Me,” alongside Lady Gaga, which is a single from Gaga’s album Chromatica. The show’s winners were received well by fans with the big winners being staples of the music industry.

The VMAs are known for having amazing performances and this year was no exception, one that stuck out to fans was The Weeknd’s performance of his single, Blinding Lights. It was full of flashy scenes and great cinematography. Miley Cyrus also put on a memorable performance of her song Midnight Sky that left fans gagging with the beautiful 80s-style production and lighting.

This year’s artist of the year award went to the one and only Lady Gaga. She has been around for years and is more than deserving of the title after her extremely well-received comeback album. Her fans were more than happy with her win and took to Twitter to celebrate. Another big winner was Doja Cat. She won the title of Best New Artist which was another well-received win because of her chart domination and total music take over with the album, Hot Pink. A group with a notorious fanbase, BTS, was a big winner this year. They walked away four awards for their work leaving their fanbase satisfied for their favorite kpop group.

This year has been crazy for many leaving lots of questions unanswered, but people were excited that they got to still see their favorite artists perform. Due to the circumstances fans were happy with the turnout and consider this an overall win for the annual award show.
