Positions: Bop or Flop?

Connor Bernier, Reporter

Produced in quarantine, and a total switch of positions, Ariana Grande released her sixth studio album, Positions, on October 30 and it was met with mixed reviews.

Ariana Grande, one of pop’s biggest superstars, surprised fans with her newest dose of whistle notes and angelic vocals with her newest album. The album has fourteen tracks and totals up to a 41-minute long experience. Fans were more than thrilled to receive a new music drop during these hard times, but for some this album missed the mark. All of her Twitter “stans” and die-hard fans streamed the album until Spotify crashed the night of the release, but after their initial excitement they began to feel like they wanted more.

I am now going to share my personal thoughts on the album. This album was a soft drop from Ariana, and by that I mean she played it safe. She stuck to her pop style production and tried to play on a more “non-kid friendly” side of her music. My favorite track would have to be the title track Positions. It was the only single she dropped from the album and the music video along with it was totally iconic. This album was made in quarantine and it shows in more ways than one. In a good way, it was a fully finished album and felt like a full experience – some artists fall flat in this category, but Ariana never fails to provide a full fledged album. Some flaws to being made in quarantine is that some songs begin to sound similar, the vibes for each song start to feel semi-repetitive, but I have to hand it to her because each song has its own unique sound.

After a couple of listens, I can say that this was not my favorite Ari album; Dangerous Woman still stands as the almighty album for me. This side of Ariana is something we have not really seen before but I’m glad we did; it’s unique and stands out from her other albums and provides a fun change. I am hopeful in the future that something will stand out the way some of her others. My final rating is about a 7/10. It’s different, entertaining, a good listen, and I would totally recommend.

Album number six was a surprise but a satisfying one for most fans. Excited for the future of her career and already grasping for more, album number seven will probably be far off the horizons and even more different than the last.
