The Tale of the Tape
December 18, 2020
When people think of boxing they think of hard hitters, quick on their feet, strong, and bred for the business. November 28 was the dawn of a new era. YouTube star Jake Paul and former NBA superstar Nate Robinson stepped inside the squared circle. Robinson played 11 seasons in the NBA.
Throughout his career, he spent time with the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, and Denver Nuggets. He was known for being small, but having the ability to take on bigger athletes when defending and dunking. Jake Paul is a YouTube star, but he has some experience in the boxing world.
In January, he faced Ali Eson Gib in his debut boxing match. Gib is much smaller than Paul. Paul obliterated Gib and beat him by TKO (when the referee must stop the fight due to one person sustaining too much injury to continue). Robinson saw this fight and took offense to it. Paul then challenged Robinson to a fight after Robinson called out Paul on his “bully tactics.” A war of words began.
“I want all the smoke. I’m a top-tier athlete! I’m putting my everything on the line for Jake. Let’s get it done. It’s that simple,” Robinson said in an interview on TMZ Sports that was reported on Bleacher Report.
“It’s an honor to be part of this historic event and have the opportunity to continue to demonstrate my boxing ability to the world against an elite athlete. I respect Nate for accepting the challenge,” Paul said in an interview.
“This is the ABC’s. Athlete vs Actor, Baller vs Buster, Champion vs Clout Chaser, and that Clout Chaser will get cancelled,” Robinson said in response to Paul.
The bout took place on November 28 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Paul’s experience came into play within the boxing match. Paul knocked down Robinson a few times before a second-round knockout that left Robinson flattened inside Staples Center. Paul stood four inches taller and was 13 years younger than Robinson. However, the factor that made Paul the winner was his major edge in training. Since his first fight in January, Paul has trained as he waited for his next opponent. Whereas, Robinson, standing at only 5’9” and being 35 years old, only started training in August.
This match was easily a hyped up match and everyone thought it was a must see. From the moment the bell rang, Paul had an advantage. Paul’s experience made a victory for Robinson a reach. The fight was scheduled for six rounds. Paul only needed two. With no fans in attendance, Robinson used his speed to take the fight to Paul. The referee had to separate them several times due to tying each other up. With about 45 seconds left in the first round, Paul hit Robinson with a hard punch to the left side of the face. Immediately, Robinson fell to the mat. Slowly, Robinson got back to his feet. As the action slowed, the round ended.
In round two, Jake Paul called the match as he hit a devastating blow that left Robinson on the mat and the world in amazement.
