Spring into the outdoors
March 19, 2021
Almost everyone can agree: this winter has been long. The month of February consisted of back-to-back snow and ice storms. It was beginning to feel like we would never see the sun again, and it would never stop snowing. However, we have finally reached March, and spring is coming.
The arrival of spring means we can go outside again. People need to start getting outside and enjoy the weather. There are many things to do in spring, and one of the best things to do is hiking. Spring is the perfect time for hiking, it is not too hot or too cold. Not only is the temperature perfect, but the scenery is the best. Flowers are blooming, the birds are starting to come out again, and everything just seems fresh.
There are many great places to hike in Centre County. One of my personal favorites is Shingletown Gap in State College. Shingletown Gap has the perfect paths surrounded by bright green trees, and the paths follow little streams. It’s also not a very challenging hike at all but is a simple walk outside. However, if you are looking for a challenge, there are great boulders with paths intertwined that you can hike, you will definitely feel accomplished once you get to the top, and the view is the best. Another great place to hike is Mount Nittany in State College. This mountain is a little tough because it is steep, but it is one of the best hikes in the area. There are two paths that you can follow that have signs along the paths. These signs provide hikers the directions to different stations along the way. Each station is an area for hikers to take a break, and the stations have the best views overlooking State College. Sometimes it is refreshing to just go on a walk after school or work, and Fisherman’s Paradise in Bellefonte is perfect for this. It’s a relatively easy hike, but the scenery is unmatched. There is a large walkway, making it easy to remain at a safe distance from other walkers. The walkway also follows along Spring Creek. It’s enclosed by trees and flowers, making the scenery exceptional compared to other local hiking trails.
Not only does the arrival of spring bring us fun hikes, but people will also find themselves in a more positive mood. This school year has been tough as is with the COVID-19 restrictions, but it has been especially hard for many because of the constant gloomy weather. Students have found themselves in an ongoing cycle of going to school, doing homework, going to bed, and then doing it all over again the next day. However, spring’s arrival means we can break the cycle by getting some time outside and doing more fun activities. Spring also means we are one step closer to the end of the year.
Go outside, pick some flowers, and frolic in the sun. Winter is finally making its long-overdue exit, and spring is coming.
