If you are a sports fan, you have probably attended a Super Bowl party or watched the NBA Finals. What about an underwater basket weaving competition?

Underwater basket weaving is one of many sports that most people don’t tend to follow or understand. In fact, most people recognize the term underwater basket weaving as an idiom referring to a useless college class or degree. This is due to the fact that it was first offered as a class at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, according to MONDORO. However, it is still offered at a few colleges and you can compete against others at events.

The sport itself requires craftsmanship and the ability to feel comfortable working underwater for an extended period of time. With this much going on at once in one sport, you would think that most people would at least understand the basics. However, senior Tyler Rice proves that most people don’t have much of an idea about what this sport involves. 

“Well if I had to guess, it’s when you weave baskets underwater. That’s really all I got,” Tyler said. 

While it may not be as popular as some other sports, there are still many people who would be more than willing to try it. Senior Wyatt Lowry is confident that underwater basket weaving is a skill that he could master.

“I think I would be very good at underwater basket weaving because I like to be in the water and I have fast hands. If I practiced and learned to weave well then I could eventually compete,” Wyatt said.

The sport is so different from most sports that almost anyone could find something about it that they enjoy. Swimmers and water enthusiasts will enjoy being submerged for so long. Artists and crafty people will enjoy actually making the baskets. Senior Olivia Astare is a prime example of this. 

“I don’t know how I would feel about actually making the basket underwater, but I enjoy swimming so it might be fun,” Olivia said. 

Most sports fans would agree that underwater basket weaving is never going to become more popular than most of the leading sports now, but that doesn’t mean you should limit yourself. You might just be able to find something that you really like about it.
