Business is fire at The Smokey Axe Grille

In a small town with so many restaurants, a new business has emerged. Stemming from the formerly known Red Horse Tavern and offering a more laid-back experience, those who venture into Axeman Brewery will see The Smokey Axe Grille.

Since the closing of Red Horse Tavern during the summer, owner Justin Leiter decided on a change of pace and on August 3, opened The Smokey Axe Grille. Now, customers who once loved Red Horse Tavern can still enjoy the food made by Leiter.

The change from Red Horse Tavern to The Smokey Axe Grille sent Leiter on a new journey.

“I was looking for a change of pace and wanted a new challenge and atmosphere,” he said.

Bellefonte seniors Ava Bressler and Lorna Dixion joined the staff in August. They greet customers and give them their orders.

“My favorite part about working at Smokey Axe is the people. Everyone is so welcoming and it is always a good time. I get to work with my friends and I love it,” Ava said.

They both recommend the buffalo chicken BLT and praise the loaded tater tots as well. With all of these fun foods, Leiter  has his own take on what his favorite foods to make are.

“Smoking and barbecuing style are my favorite foods to make. I appreciate that there is a process to it and requires attention and even includes some science,” Leiter said.

Along with great food, the environment of The Smokey Axe Grille is another attribute that makes this restaurant different from the rest.

“The environment is so fun and welcoming. Everyone always has a positive attitude and I love how laid-back everything is and does not get stressful as most food service jobs are,” Lorna said.

With so many other dining options in Bellefonte, why should people eat at this new restaurant? Leiter gives his two cents.

“We are trying to put out fun food that goes along with our location inside Axemann Brewery that compliments the brewery and the beer,” Leiter said.

The Smokey Axe Grille provides a family friendly atmosphere and is definitely a place for those who used to love the Red Horse Tavern, or just want to try something new.
