Nuclear bombs, theories that change the world, dramatic love stories, and many tears. Oh, don’t forget that you’ll want to use the bathroom badly during the movie if you get a drink. These are just a few of the things you will experience while watching the movie Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer is a three hour long movie with many important parts that viewers need to pay attention to. If they don’t, they may miss a part that holds weight or that may be significant to the story line later. It is a long movie and viewers need to commit to watching it, but it is most certainly worth it.
The movie is rated R for sexuality, nudity, and language. This is most definitely an awkward movie to be watching with your mother.
The movie Oppenheimer focuses on the main character J Robert Oppenheimer, played by actor Cillian Murphy, and his experience with being the leader of the Manhattan Project which was the creation of the nuclear bomb.
The movie begins with some very dramatic up-close shots. 2023 Bellefonte alumni Gary Angle went and watched the movie over the summer. He in particular enjoyed these shots.
“Those up shots of the chemicals reacting were absolutely insane. It was just stunning sparks of light and other things floating around and it made the movie feel so much more capturing,” Gary said.
Viewers are then taken through Oppenheimer’s past and present as there are time jumps in the movie. Viewers learn about Oppenheimer’s first experiences as a student. Then they watch as he becomes not a student, but a professor. He goes through lots of changes throughout the movie. He meets two women who play love interests, Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh, and Kitty Oppenheimer, played by Emily Blunt. Oppenheimer is a very smart man with lots of theories. He was a theoretical physicist and one that would make history by creating destruction itself. You will see how his thoughts and theories made him one of the most admired men or the time.
Since it is a three hour long movie, there are lots of parts that had an impact and that were important. Gary experiences this.
“When the bomb went off it was silent. I mean the movie was silent, the theater was silent, everything was silent. You watched as the explosion overtook the sky and an eerie feeling entered the room. I got goosebumps and chills. The silence was deafening. Just when you thought that you wouldn’t hear the explosion, the theater shook with sound. It was such an insane experience,” he said.
While some students enjoyed the movie completely, Senior Trey Wagner was not one of them.
“The movie was too long and drawn out. The ending was really good, but it was hard to follow,” Trey said.
The movie can be confusing at times and not easy to understand, but everything ties together and makes sense in the end. It is definitely a movie that would need to be re-watched. That way, when you watch it back, everything will make more sense.
