How much do you think Homecoming dresses are? Between $50 and $100? Possibly if you ordered one online, but the prices go up every year for Prom and Homecoming dresses. Typically they’re more than $350, and that’s just in the State College area alone.
The past couple of years Penn State sororities collected and sold gently used Homecoming dresses to nearby high schools to raise money for THON. Bellefonte Area High School had the opportunity to get fashionable and expensive dresses for a very affordable price.
Sophomore Raven Harter was able to attend this drive again for the second year and put her two cents in about the event to the public.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for people of all backgrounds and incomes to get something nice for half the usual price,” Raven said.
At the event, 70 dresses were sold and $1,000 was raised for THON. Not only do they raise money for children with cancer, but they as well make young ladies in high school very happy and appreciative with being able to buy classy dresses for a very low price.
A senior at Bellefonte Area High School, Hope Martin, has gone to the event for a couple of years now and she was able to buy two dresses with the total price of $30.
“One of them was a Princess Polly dress and they’re pretty expensive but I got it for $15,” Hope said.
Every single person has a different unique style that goes with their personality. It gets frustrating very quickly when looking for clothes in stores and they do not have anything you like.
Another positive outcome of the fundraiser is all the dresses are different for all of the different kinds of girls.
“They had an interesting selection. Some of the dresses were better than others but there were a variety of different styles which was good for all of the different kinds of girls that went with different tastes in styles,” Hope said.
Sophomore Julia Weiser thought it was a great bonding time for a parent and their child. They help each other decide which dress fits and looks the best by experiencing their thoughts and feelings.
“And overall an amazing bonding experience between parents and their kids,” Julia said.
If you live near Centre County, Pennsylvania and are a parent, friend, relative, sibling of a high schooler tell them to take a look at this event. If this sounds like a good idea and this is not an event that goes on where you live then recommend this to your nearest college to raise money for THON and make a young ladies year.
