Coco Gauff, at 19 years old, has made a name for herself on the professional tennis scene and etched her way into the history books. Recently, Gauff became an US Open champion, becoming the tenth female in history to win the US Open as a teenager. The last teenage winner from the United States, prior to Coco, was Serena Williams in 2001.
In the final of the US Open, Coco defeated the number one ranked tennis player in the world, Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. Sabalenka took the first set 6-2, but Coco took the next two sets, winning the second set 6-3. Then, the third and final set, she took 6-2, securing her US Open victory. This was her first of potentially many major tournament wins.
Coco has been a rising star for a long time. In 2019, at 15 years old, Gauff knocked off her idol, Venus Williams, in the first round of Wimbledon. That victory was just a small piece of things to come for Coco.
Coco’s impact from this win will go far beyond the tennis court. She inspired young girls everywhere, especially those who play tennis. Coco proved that greatness has no age barrier. Her hard work, composure, and determination is unparalleled to most people her age. Senior Jacob Corman admires Coco’s passion for the game.
“The thing I most admire about Coco Gauff is her dedication to the game and her passion to grow the game of tennis as she becomes a prominent figure within the sport. Her accomplishments at such a young age just show the amount of hard work she has put in and how her career is just going to get better and better as she becomes more mature and confident with her game,” Jacob said.
Coco has a very bright future ahead of her in tennis. There is no doubt that we will hear her name many times again. Jacob believes that this is just the beginning for Coco.
“Coco for sure has a bright future ahead of her as she looks to be getting comfortable with her game and continuing to gain confidence. Playing professionally at such a young age gives her the advantage of experiencing big moments and allows her to become more mature when playing,” Jacob said.
Having been compared to a young Serena Williams, Coco is the future of tennis in the United States.
