Over 50 students sat in anticipation at BAHS knowing that all their achievements would be acknowledged. Soon, they would open up more opportunities in their life.
On October 25, students from Bellefonte High were inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). With this induction, the students were introduced into a society, which is often known for the opportunities given to students to maximize their academic potentials in both secondary and post-secondary educational paths. AP Psych and history teacher Mrs. Christine Morris has been supervising the chapter since 2015.
In this year alone, NHS plans to offer a combined $2 million worth of scholarships among 600 students nationwide. However, NHS is more than just being on an honor roll, as they also recognize those who demonstrated certain qualities in academics, leadership, and even character. These requirements set the expectations high for those wanting to join the society.
With being newly enrolled, students are recognized for their efforts in academics. These efforts can then be recognized for scholarships through the society.
“I’m proud of myself for making it into the chapter because it is a testament to the work I have put in since freshman year, and it is nice for that effort to be acknowledged,” junior Allison Nicholls said.
With the options to apply for NHS scholarship offers, enrolled seniors need to also think about post-graduate options for themselves. On average, students can gain anywhere from $3,200 up to $25,000 worth of scholarships. This money can allow for seniors to cover some of their college expenses.
“I want to go to college for biomedical engineering,” senior Cedric Bagwell said.
In many cases, having an NHS membership listed on your application is beneficial for college-bound students. While having a membership on your application allows colleges to see your achievements that is not the only reason to join the society.
“Honestly, I joined the NHS because it was a way to show the hard work I have put into academics. It also looks good on college applications. I am excited to be recognized for my achievements and help the community,” Allison said.
Joining the NHS can grant students new opportunities that can further their future in academics.
“My advice to students is to focus on their academics and going to see their teachers if they understand the material. NHS is not just about academics. It’s about service to one’s community,” Mrs. Morris said.
Through the student’s leadership, academic standings, and character, will the new inductees begin to be able to achieve a nice future for themselves in the chapter.
