Are you a fan of tropes that have intense love triangles, a female main character trying to find herself, and a house full of teenage boys that she’s living with? If so, then the show “My Life with the Walter Boys” is for you.
My Life with the Walter Boys is a book by author Ali Novak that has recently been turned into a show. The show aired on Netflix on December 7, 2023 and has been very successful with more than 20 million views since its release, according to Holly Wood Reporter. The show has already been renewed for a second season.
In the show, main character Jackie Howard is forced to move in with old family friends after a tragic accident that killed all of her immediate family. She goes from the busy city of New York, to the run down old country Colorado. Plot twist, the family has a mother, a father, eleven sons, one daughter, and a troublemaking dog. There are two boys in particular that have caught Jackie’s attention.
Jackie now must learn to cope with her family’s death, a new environment, and with two incredibly attractive teenage boys fighting for her heart.
On one side, there is Cole. He is a brooding mysterious playboy with a flirty careless attitude on the outside. After a bad leg injury, he lost sight of his dream, football and the college scholarship that was supposed to come with it. He starts off incredibly cold, but as you get to know his character, you get to see the boy underneath that is just hurt and looking for a purpose.
On the other hand, there’s Alex. He is charming, well-spoken, and caring. He shows Jackie around town and has her back from the very beginning, being very protective of her in school and at home. He made sure to do his best to make Jackie feel welcome and at home.
One of the most iconic scenes in the show is the sunset scene. The song “Constellations” (Piano Version) by Jade LeMac is playing in the background. Jackie and Alex go horseback riding up to a spot out in a field. There are two large trees and the light from the sunlight shines through them the same way that it did with the two towers back in New York. This gives Jackie a sense of home and some more brownie points for Alex. Cole fans were infuriated to discover that that scene was actually supposed to be with Cole instead of Alex.
“After watching the show, I was scrolling through edits on TikTok and found out that the scene was supposed to have Cole instead of Alex. I was absolutely furious. It would have been so monumental for them,” freshman Shayna Martin said.
The show has a lot of parallels and similarities with another book-turned-show on Amazon Prime called “The Summer I Turned Pretty” which I also recommend to watch if you enjoyed “My Life with the Walter Boys.”
