As the gymnastics season has come to a close, Bellefonte High’s gymnastics team looks back on their season full of twists and tumbles.
The girls varsity gymnastics team consisted of Rebecca Burns, Gloria Doherty, Paige Jodon, Talia McCloskey, Madyson Miller, and Victoria Schellenberg.
Being a gymnast is not an easy task.Gymnastics is notoriously known for being a difficult sport to get any progress in. To be a gymnast, a person needs to put their body through training to improve flexibility, endurance, and strength. Sophomore Madyson “Mady” Miller is a young gymnast who dares to put her body through the strain.
“I decided to do gymnastics this year because I participated in it last year and really enjoyed it. Plus, I did competitive gymnastics for a few years and missed gymnastics and high school was a way to do without it being as stressful and time consuming,” Mady said.
There are two types of gymnastics: individual and group. In individual gymnastics, a person works by themselves using different types of equipment to perform their tricks. However in team gymnastics, a team works together to perform together. High school gymnasts also travel to other high schools to perform in competitions. These experiences with friends can lead into moments to be remembered. Senior Rebecca Burns reminiscences about these experiences.
“I have many great memories of gymnastics, and my favorite high school gymnastics memory would be states last year, or Senior Night this year,” she said.
Due to the difficulty of the sport, perseverance is an essential trait for aspiring gymnasts. Being able to accomplish tricks that other experienced gymnasts are able to do can take up to years of hard work.
“I would say for those aspiring to be gymnasts to never give up on it. It’s a very hard sport and it’s also very time consuming. It teaches you a lot of life lessons,” Mady said.
