This spring, BAHS Performing Arts will be putting on the musical Between the Lines. The musical is based on the young adult novel, Between the Lines, by Jodi Picoult.
Delilah is a high school junior whose parents divorced and she moves with her mom to a new town and a new school. When she has trouble fitting in, she loses herself in her favorite fairytale. One day, while reading the book, she sees a message from the Prince. She discovers he is looking for a way out of his story, just like she is looking for a new story for her life. The musical plays out the interaction between these two and how they learn to deal with the worlds around them.
Junior Erin Ashe will be performing the role of Delilah. Erin has been acting for eight years and this won’t be her first production.
“At BAHS I have been in three shows so far; Ursula in Bye Bye Birdie, Neleus in Mary Poppins, and Emory in Auntie Mame…,” Erin said.
Choir Director Mr. Eric Brinser, the director and head of the Drama Club at BAHS, would describe Erin as a determined individual.
“Erin is such a hard worker. Being the lead in a musical is very demanding. Besides all of the lines and songs that you need to learn and memorize, a lead also sets the tone for the cast. Erin is always prepared and engaged in rehearsals,” Mr. Brinser said.
Senior Sam Henry will be performing the male lead as Prince Oliver, who is also the love interest of Delilah in the production.
“Both Sam and Erin embody their individual characters very well. As actors, they seem to have a good deal of trust in the other performer, which is very important for love interests,” Mr. Brinser said.
This will be Sam’s third year with the Drama Club, and his third production with BAHS. Previously Sam was Conrad Birdie in Bye Bye Birdie and the Chairman in Mary Poppins.
Mr. Brinser felt like this would be a good production for BAHS for many reasons.
“I saw this show off-Broadway two summers ago and really liked the material. I thought it would make a great show for high school students because it is set in a high school and has characters that high school students can relate to. There’s some really great music as well,” Mr. Brinser said.
Mr. Brinser is most excited about the creative opportunities he has with the show.
“There’s only been one professional production, so we get to bring a lot of our own ideas to the table and shape portions of the show without added expectations from what people have seen before,” Mr. Brinser said.
The opening night of Between The Lines is April 11. You can also see it on April 12 and 13. Tickets will be for sale about two weeks before the show.
