An addition to Bellefonte High strikes the attention of students and teachers. Business teachers Mr. Ryan Myers and Mr. Andrew Weigold have started a new project that has all the students and staff intrigued.
After visiting Hollidaysburg and State College high schools with students, the idea to start a student store at Bellefonte began to come to life. Students from Mr. Ryan Myers’ Entrepreneurial Mindset class and Mr. Andrew Weigold’s Accounting class have worked hard this year to open the store.
“The entrepreneurship class really looked into what they wanted to put in the store, and that’s where the inspiration came from,” Mr. Weigold said.
To fund supplies, Mr. Weigold and Mr. Myers received donations from the school and local businesses. All proceeds from the store will be initially used to fund future purchases for products for the store.
“After a while we hope to give back to classes for different projects, or donate to the community around us, and do some fun field trips for our students,” Mr. Weigold said.
Raider Corner’s first day open for business is today, March 1. Students expect to eventually have access to the store menu on the school website, or a social media account. As of right now the menu contains items including beef jerky, fruit roll-ups, and gum, as well as beverages like hot and iced coffee, celsius, and water. The store will be open during the following periods: Homeroom, periods 1,9, 10, and 11 on Days 1-4; periods 1, 9, and Raider on Day 5; and period 11 and Raider on Day 6. The store will close at 3:05 every day.
As of right now, the store will be selling Bellefonte football apparel, and they hope to be able to partner with more sports and clubs around the school as the store grows.
Students working in the store can gain community service hours, as well as real-life business experience.
According to Mr. Weigold and Mr. Myers, seniors Isaak Bloom and Tyler Lehman played an essential role in the opening of the story. Both students agree that the challenging parts of running the store will be keep track of inventory. However, they this small challenge will not overshadow the general excitement of running the store.
“I am most excited for the popcorn and coffee that we will offer at the school store. I am also excited for the different products that we are going to have in the store and I think that students will really enjoy coming and buying from the store,” Isaak said.
Ryan is looking forward to seeing how things pan out.
“I’m most excited to see our hard work pay off and make improvements and revisions in the future” he said.
Many students are wondering whether or not their teachers will allow them to leave class to go get an iced coffee or some Goldfish crackers. Mr. Myers expects that each teacher will have their own policy on it. Mr. Weigold hopes teachers will allow students to support the store.
“I hope that they’re flexible with people leaving and getting food, then eating in class as long as they are respectful with it,” Mr. Weigold said.
If you would like more information, you can contact Mr. Myers or Mr. Weigold. The student store will be located across from the cafeteria.
Finally, the Raider Corner would like students to know that there may be some issues at the start, such as lines and running out of products, but the store will keep improving with each passing day. The store will get better and better and they hope students will keep coming.
