The girls swim team was crowned District Champions for the fourth consecutive year on February 25. They traveled to Bucknell for the State Championship on March 14, hoping to win the title. As from this victory for the girls, overall, both the boys and girls swim teams have had a successful season this year.
With the girls team having a winning streak, they had some pressure on their backs, but that didn’t get in the way of their performance. Senior Katelyn Packer, who has been swimming throughout her high school career, had high expectations for the season.
“With everyone’s hard work and dedication throughout the season, I expected us to win Districts and advance to States,” she said.
Unexpectedly, the girls swim team over the beginning of the season had low numbers compared to previous years causing anxiety and not knowing what the outcome of the district meet would be.
“It is a great honor to be a part of a team that has the ability to do that with such little numbers,” senior Kiaha McCool, one of the top team members, said.
Although they were all worried, they still went into their meet with their heads held high and ready to have fun.
Kiaha has had the opportunity to witness winning Districts all three years and gained the knowledge to know what they have to accomplish to win for the fourth year in a row.
“As we went into the meet, we had already expected us girls to be able to pull out a win, and we managed to do that. Being a team has helped us make it this far because of our hard work and determination when we are together,” Kiaha said.
On the other hand, the boys team has a smaller group compared to the girls which is a negative outcome on their behalf.
“I think that despite our small size we have been able to show how hard work pays off in the end,” senior Cedric Bagwell said, who has been a part of the team for awhile now.
All of the current seniors graduating are sad to be leaving behind their team, but they encourage their teammates to have a successful meet and fill their shoes as best as they can.
