If you ever find yourself getting lost inside of the book you’re reading, you would love the musical Between the Lines.
This musical is about 17 year-old Delilah McPhee, who moves to a new town after her father leaves her mother. Delilah soon gets bullied at her new school and finds comfort in fairy tales. She inserts herself into her stories, where she later falls in love with the character Prince Oliver. Oliver wishes to leave his fairy tale life to join regular life. Delilah later goes to the author’s house to demand to rewrite the ending of the book to write Oliver out of his story. Delilah meets the author’s son who has a striking resemblance to Prince Oliver, and they both fall in love with each other. Bellefonte High’s Drama Club presented the musical from April 11-13. The cast and crew had a blast in the process of rehearsing and performing.
Junior Erin Ashe played the lead role of Delilah. To prepare for her role, Erin spent many days with her singing teachers learning dialogue and singing techniques. Between the Lines is more of a “modern show,” which gave Erin a challenge when learning a new style of singing. She would also practice with friends outside of school daily to better her performance. Erin enjoyed the new perspective she got on fairy tales after playing Delilah and all of her memories.
“My favorite behind the scenes memory was definitely dancing out backstage to ‘Happily Ever After Hour’ and Eli’s song ‘Out of character.’ Another one is being so hot after the first act that my friends put wet paper towels all over me to cool me down,” Erin said.
Senior Sam Henry played the supporting lead of Prince Oliver. To prepare for his role, Sam practiced with his family and friends in and outside of rehearsal. He enjoyed learning all the songs and the funny scenes the show contained.
“I think the show went better than expected. We all worked so hard and really made it look great. I will miss performing on stage with my friends,” Sam said.
Senior Kate Harman played Grace McPhee who is Delilah’s mom. Kate prepared for her role by constantly practicing her songs and her lines over with friends and family. Kate enjoyed spending time with her cast on and off the stage. One of her favorite memories was her singing all her songs and performing their choreography with the stage manager, junior Sophie Rosemas, and props manager, junior Ava McNeal. As it being Kate’s last year, her feelings are bittersweet.
“I am going to miss the drama community so so much. The people are so supportive and encouraging. They make every second enjoyable, and I’m going to miss them all so much!” Kate said.
Overall, the whole cast can agree the show was perfectly performed each show. Everyone performed beyond their best with little to no mistakes. The cast will later attend the annual Isaac awards on May 25.
