While on tour, pop star Olivia Rodrigo dropped GUTS (Spilled), the deluxe version of her album that released in September of 2023. Well, here I am again to tell you all about the five new songs that Rodrigo dropped in her addition to this hardcore album.
To see my previous review, click here. I’d recommend reading that first or refreshing your memory. Don’t forget to listen to the songs as well. They are pretty good, even if I’m not that big of a fan.
First up is easily the best song on the entire album, deluxe or not. “Obsessed” has been on the top of my on-repeat since the moment it came out. Truly, it is an amazing song that never seems to grow old. I’m forever grateful that I don’t have any ill feelings toward any of my exes and that I’m in a secure relationship because otherwise, I would have lost it listening to this song. The song is about Rodrigo obsessing over her partner’s ex, and my god is it a good representation of the feeling. She screams at just the right moments, contrasted with this whisper where you can almost feel the sneer. An early version of the song was released on TikTok, and while I’m sad to see the lyric change, overall, it’s a good song. Four out of five stars, will probably be on my Spotify Wrapped on accident. s
“girl i’ve always been” lacks the signature rock vibe of the album. The main instrument is an acoustic guitar that matches Rodrigo’s voice very well. She seems to adopt an accent while singing that is very pleasing to the ear. It’s a short and sweet song that I can listen to on a sunny day with a smile and a laugh. It’s relatable and fun, three out of five stars.
Halfway through the song additions, “scared of my guitar” provides another slow and sad song on the mostly upbeat album. The song follows Rodrigo as she tells the listener that she can’t lie to her guitar because it knows her too well. It’s incredibly relatable. Everyone has something that is so ingrained in who they are, that it is hard to be dishonest about who you are while doing it. It feels like sitting in your room alone wondering why you can’t be honest with your friends about how you feel. It’s perfect for anyone who just needs to let it out. Another 3 out of 5 stars.
“stranger” is another song with a heavy acoustic guitar track. Rodrigo uses her voice in multiple tracks to give the song a light and airy vibe. It’s another relatable song to just mourn too. The majority of the album is break-up music, and this is just another addition. The lyrics are good and symbolic, but that’s the only thing that really shines in the song. 3 out of 5stars for me.
The last of the songs, “so american” is just… mid. It has good instruments and good lyrics, but there is no charm to the song. It has an odd guitar part that does not sit well with me. Overall the song is a 2 out of 5, and I always skip it.
In the end, Rodrigo is a good artist – fantastic even – however, most of these additions were just good, not the greatness she can achieve. But, while I enjoy these songs, I’m excited about what she can do in the future.
