As the much-awaited 2024 NFL draft comes to an end, it’s time to reflect on some of the winners and losers of this year’s selections.
The draft’s first round, which kicked off on Thursday, April 25th, saw numerous notable records shattered. With an unprecedented six quarterbacks selected, it marked the highest number in any round of the common draft era (since 1967). While also setting a record-breaking 23 offensive players were chosen in the first round, including an astounding 14 consecutive selections at the draft’s outset, setting yet another remarkable benchmark in draft history.
Kicking the draft off, the Chicago Bears selected Quarterback (QB) Caleb Williams from the University of Southern California. This came as no surprise to football fans around the world, as the highly talented and regarded QB solidified himself as the best college football player over his college career. Bellefonte High’s students spoke very highly of Williams and mentioned how it was no surprise at all.
“Caleb Williams has been the solidified number one overall pick for quite some time now. If he would’ve been in the draft last year he would’ve gone first as well. That’s how good he is,” junior Peyton Vancas said.
Following that, QB’s Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye were selected second and third overall to the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, with hopes of securing their future franchise quarterbacks. The remainder of the first round unfolded largely as expected until the 8th pick when the Atlanta Falcons’ selection added an element of surprise to the draft.
After recently picking up QB Kirk Cousins from free agency and signing him to a hefty contract, many fans believed they weren’t in need of a QB anymore. However, with the 8th pick they selected QB Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington University. Catching many fans by surprise and even left their own fan base questioning their pick.
“There was no need for a QB. They just signed a guy to a 4-year deal who has proven to be an elite QB in the NFL. It would’ve made more sense to build around him like a Wide Receiver or Offensive Lineman,” senior Trevor Johnson said.
After the conclusion of the first round, one team stood out far more than any other. The Chicago Bears, led by General Manager Ryan Poles, made a significant impact, executing bold moves and strategic selections that set them apart from the rest. Drafting their soon-to-be franchise QB Williams, and adding a weapon to their offense in Wide Reciever (WR) Rome Odunze out of Washington University.
“They added two offensive weapons which were arguably the best in both of their positions in the draft room. I’d say they had a good first round,” Peyton said.
The rest of the rounds unfolded as expected, but after reviewing the entire draft, three teams stood out to me: the Chicago Bears, as mentioned earlier, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite having late first-round picks in the 20s, both the Eagles and Steelers emerged with highly talented players who addressed key needs.
The Eagles had struggled with cornerback (CB) issues throughout the previous season, but in the draft, they managed to secure two of the top three cornerbacks available, significantly improving their defensive backfield. In the later rounds, the Eagles were able to secure some significant needs in the LB position and offensive room. Securing all there needs to have a successful season.
“This offseason was huge for the Eagles. They were able to sign athletes like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Saquon Barkley in the offseason. And came into the draft and secured two defensive players that they were in need of,” senior Ethan Tomassaci said.
The Steelers, on the other hand, entered the 2024 draft with a clear plan and executed it perfectly. They used their early picks to strengthen their offensive line, securing two highly regarded offensive linemen, according to many analysts around the country. Later in the draft, they were able to pick up the highly talented wide receiver Roman Wilson from Michigan. Following a big offseason that included signing multiple quarterbacks, the Steelers focused on finding protection for their new QBs, ensuring a fortified offense for the upcoming season.
The 2024 NFL Draft will go down in history for its numerous record-breaking numbers, while also creating unforgettable memories for many families and players across the country. The next generation of football players was unveiled, and they now have the opportunity to showcase their hard work to the world.
