While there are many things that recognize a player’s determination and athleticism for the game that they play, there is one thing in the world of college football that stands out among the rest: The Heisman Trophy. This recognition was established in 1935 to signify the best of the best in college football. This trophy has been won by athletes like Charles Woodson, Barry Sanders, Derrick Henry, and Cam Newton. This year has a stacked roster of people that are in the running for the 2024 Heisman Trophy Winner. Let’s take a look at our top contestants.
Travis Hunter, Wide Receiver, Colorado
Travis Hunter is one of the frontrunners for this award; he plays on both sides of the ball at wide receiver and cornerback. Some could argue that Hunter is one of the best all-around athletes to come out of Colorado University. Currently Hunter ranks in the top ten of each category for receptions, reception yards, and receiving touchdowns. Hunter is a multi Big 12 offensive player of the week and a former Lott IMPACT trophy recipient. He hopes to add another trophy to the case: the coveted Heisman trophy.
Cam Ward, Quarterback, Miami
Cam Ward is truly in many minds one of the breakout stars of this 2024 season in college football. He is a former recipient of the Jerry Rice award. Currently, Ward has 29 passing touchdowns and 3,146 passing yards. He only has six interceptions so far so when you put the numbers next to each other it’s going to look like 29/6. Ward has led Miami to get to the top of the ranks of all of college football. Can Ward make history and become the third player from Miami University and win the Heisman Trophy?
Ashton Jeanty, Running back, Boise State
One of the more shocking performances so far has been Boise State’s five star running back Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty is on pace for almost 40 rushing touchdowns this season. Currently he averages around 7.7 yards per carry. The breakout Bronco surely has Boise State fans hoping for a Heisman trophy to come their way. Boise State has never had a Heisman winner come their way so it would be a blessing if Jeanty could bring that trophy home to them. But can he?
Dillon Gabriel, Quarterback, Oregon
Being a backup to Bo Nix can put lots of pressure on a person, but not to worry because Dillion Gabriel hasn’t disappointed. Gabriel has been leading Oregon to the top of the ranks. They have finally made it No.1 ranked in college football. Gabriel currently has a total of 22 total touchdowns this season which mean he’s on pace for almost 35 touchdowns. The Oregon Ducks are shy of the Heisman Trophy. This is the first time since Marcus Martiota brought it back in 2014.Gabriel is the second Oregon Duck to be a finalist for the Heisman. Who said the underdog was incapable of taking the Heisman home?
