Freshman Elisa Crouth “I’m so excited to be going. I haven’t been to a SZA or Kendrick Lamar concert before but I am a fan of both artists,” freshman Elise Crouthamel said.
SZA (Solana Imani Rowe) was born November 8, 1989 in St. Louis, Missouri. From a young age, her family began to notice her vocal talent. Throughout her college years, she often drank alcohol and smoked. She ended up dropping out of college and started a job bartending at a local club. She later stated that throughout those years she struggled a lot with mental health and had lots of tension with her parents.
After leaving college, she spent a summer at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She interned for Billionaire Boys Club, a clothing brand founded by fashion designers and music producers Pharrell Williams and Nigo.
SZA made important connections in 2011 that kick started her singing career. She was delivering clothing to members in the TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment), an independent record label that represented artists including Kendrick Lamar. When TDE’s co-president, Terrence ,Henderson, heard a recording of her singing, he was amazed.
In 2013, she self-released her mixtape See.SZA.Run, and became the first female artist signed with TDE.
In 2018, she collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the song “All the Stars”. The song earned them several Grammy Award nominations and an Academy Award nomination.
Throughout the years creating music, she has had new experiences, opportunities, and has won many awards. Kids from the age of 14 love listening to SZA and her music.
In her music, SZA’s lyrics hit hard to people going through the same type of things in their lives.
Lyrics like “I don’t wanna see you with anyone but me, nobody gets me like you” and “And I know that it’s too late, I don’t wanna lose what’s left of you” from Nobody Gets Me, is one of the most popular.
