Bellefonte High has many sports teams. The cheer team has attended all the football games and other school sporting events. The school also has a competition and game day team that recently traveled to Florida for Nationals.
This year the team has accomplished many things like supporting the community and giving back to those who support them.
“Next season, we will continue to get more involved in the community and work hard as a team to set goals and remain a nationally ranked team,” Coach “Skip” Headings said.
The team has also set other goals including pushing their competition team to compete more as well as keeping their strong Gameday team.
“We will continue to work on setting goals and working hard as a team to make every year a success,” Coach Headings said.
One of the captains, Senior Alannah McNichol, has been impacted by cheer. She has learned to work with people and push herself through hard practices.
“The hardest part of cheer is the drama and doing hard stunts over and over again,” Alannah said.
Although the team has differences they figure out a way to look past them and continue to master stunts.
“The hardest thing about coaching is getting to know all the different personalities and to bring them together as one team and one unit that works hard and sets goals to achieve,” Coach Headings said.
Senior and captain Alana Carver has learned leadership skills and respect through being cheer captain. She has learned lessons during her time as captain as well.
“I’ve learned that in order to receive respect you have to give it first,” Alana said.
The sport of cheerleading can be mentally and physically tough, especially after doing stunts over and over again to perfect them. With that being said there are always good memories to look back on and the knowledge of knowing each team member.
“I think the easiest thing as a coach is knowing each team member loves the sport as much as I do and sharing that common thing makes coaching so rewarding here at BHS,” Coach Headings said.
Next year, Coach Headings is hoping to get the team more involved in school events and cheering at multiple local events to give back what they have received.
