Hockey is one of the oldest American sports and is one of the most watched sports in the world, specifically the National Hockey League (NHL). One of the greatest records in all of sports is the all time goal record in the NHL which was originally set by arguably the greatest hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky.
Gretzky set the bar at 894 goals over the course of 20 seasons in the National Hockey League. Many said this all-time scoring record would never be beaten but Ovechkin said otherwise. This record would be broken in Ovechkin’s 20th season with the Washington Capitals, scoring his 895th goal against the New York Islanders on April 6, 2025 on a power play from Ovechkin’s “office” (his preferred shooting spot).
“Gretzky has been dethroned, Ovechkin is the goat, all hail Ovechkin,” junior hockey fanatic Nate Cherinka said.
Ovechkin started his career off with the Washington Capitals in 2005 where he remains today. Ovechkin has won the Hart Memorial Trophy for most valuable player three times and has been named to the NHL first All-Star team eight times so far in his 20 years in the league.
“I know that everybody said Gretzky’s record wouldn’t ever be broken but I saw it coming. Ovechkin has been hot ever since he entered the league and I believe that even Ovechkin’s record will be broken one day. The sport is evolving every year and I think that no record is meant to stay” junior Nate Cherinka said.
