Bellefonte High School’s Art Show on May 15 featured intricate pieces, beautiful sculptures, murals, and more. The talented students of art teachers Mrs. Erin Welsh and Mrs. Heather McClire’s classes presented their art pieces on display for the community to appreciate.
Setting up the art pieces wasn’t an easy task, there were multitudes of art to bring down to the halls of BHS, art to label, setting up displays, advertising for the show, and providing refreshments. But everything was worth it to be able to expose the community to the talent at BHS.
“Each student needs to have a minimum number of pieces shown, and senior advanced students must have a senior showcase, highlighting work from 9-12 years,” Mrs. Welsh said.
At the show, there were people, food, and incredible art to look at. There were many contrasting colors, cool designs, and fun shapes that were intriguing.
Each piece presented a new color scheme and visually appealing features to dissect. For example, senior Emily Price’s use of contrasting colors to make the character portrayed in her drawing pop.
Her use of highlights and shadows brings the portrait to life, and the use of brush strokes to create movement and apparent heat does not go unnoticed.
Similarly, the use of deeper tones in Gianna Healy’s portrait of a shoe provides the illusion of depth. Her drawing makes you feel like you could reach through the drawing and grab the shoe.
Mrs. Welsh might not have a favorite, but there was one piece that always stood out to her, made by the talented sophomore Isabella Barbata.
“Bella Barbata’s skull painting/mosaic/mixed-media piece has been memorable. It was done on her own time, she provided the antler, we repurposed an old frame we found in our supply closet and she mosaiced the entire frame,” Mrs. Welsh said.
There are so many beautiful and unique pieces to be appreciated. One of the best things about art is that it’s all in how you perceive it.
“I found that creating art in any way can help to tell a story in ways words cannot. Creating has become comforting for me and I hope it has for others as well,” senior Lauren Conklin said.
The students at BHS are nothing short of talented, if you had the chance to attend this show you’ve experienced this firsthand.
