The ongoing debate on AI generated art has been a hot topic online for the last couple of years. People are split between both sides when it comes to the discussions of the benefits and disadvantages of this genre of art. Many artists argue that the use of AI art can potentially be harmful for careers and that the use of AI art could potentially put artists out of jobs.
Digital Graphics teacher, Mr. Jonathan Mayes was interviewed for his opinion on the use of AI to create art.
“I believe that artists who are serious about their profession will not be affected by AI, but there will be amateur and educational issues that will come up from the use of AI in a classroom setting. Students and professionals who are serious about their craft will continue to be creative in their own way and make their own art for others to enjoy as well as make a living from their designs as I would assume that most organizations both commercial and private are looking for their own original designs and not computer generated,” Mr. Mayes said.
While AI can make art, they don’t have emotion or creativity like a human artist. While artists think that this could impact their careers, some think that using AI could be beneficial to include others in creating art.
“AI can be useful in helping to generate ideas and brainstorm possible designs more effectively and efficiently, but the final design will need to come from the artist. Brainstorming art is as important as coming up with the idea, sometimes more difficult than actually creating the project, because once you have a visualization you can work very effectively in creating that visualization, but without the vision, art is difficult and not personable,” Mayes said.
Using the help of AI is ok to brainstorm ideas, however the end result should come from a real person and without that human touch, the art could be seen as lifeless.
On the other hand, there is a side of the debate where people agree with the use of AI art and defend its uses. Some say that it helps people create art who may be less gifted while others say it makes it more accessible.
Craig Boehman, an American fine art photographer, wrote his own article on the topic of AI art and what his opinions toward the idea were.
“But these aren’t the only reasons why I love using AI to create art. It’s not only about convenience. For me, at the heart of it, it’s about expression and intention,” Craig Boehman states.
He’s saying that AI art is a useful tool when you don’t have enough time or the proper resources to create an artistic vision. Using AI could help others express their creativity freely without being limited on materials and time.
“For me, at the heart of it, it’s about expression and intention. These two traits, I believe, are essential to any definition of art,” Craig states.
While both arguments could be understood with a bit of research, the debate still continues between both sides.
