After spending two weeks behind Drake’s, “In My Feelings,” Maroon 5’s, “Girls Like You” finally took the top spot on Billboard’s Top 100 chart for the week of September 29. “Girls Like You” is the first pop song to reach the number one spot in thirty-four weeks, with the last being Camila Cabello’s, “Havana.” Every song that has been the number one song within the thirty-four weeks has been a rap song, making that the longest rap streak in history.

“Girls Like You” was released on May 30 this year as the third single to Maroon 5’s latest album Red Pill Blues. The song debuted at ninety-four for the week of June 9 and sky-rocketed to number four the following week of June 16. “Girls Like You” remained in the top five until it reached number two, starting its six weeks in the number two spot behind Drake’s, “In My Feelings.”

Rap music’s record breaking run of thirty-four weeks began with Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which had the number one spot for eleven weeks. Drake dethroned himself with his “Nice For What,” which held number one for eight weeks. Childish Gambino’s, “This Is America” held the spot for two weeks and Post Malone’s, “Psycho” had it for one week. Following XXXTentacion’s death, his song “Sad!” took number one for a week and Cardi B’s, “I Like It” held the spot for another week. Starting the week of July 21, Drake’s, “In My Feelings” took the number one spot for ten weeks.

“Girls Like You” became Maroon 5’s fourth number one hit on the Billboard charts. Their first, “Makes Me Wonder,” spent three weeks as number one in 2007. Their second, “Moves Like Jagger” spent four weeks in the number one spot in 2011. “One More Night” became Maroon 5’s third number one, which spent nine weeks in the spot, for the week of September 29, 2012, exactly six years before “Girls Like You” became their fourth number one. The song also became Cardi B’s third number one, following her smash hit “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It”. Cardi B broke her own record of being the only female rapper with two number one hits, with “Girls Like You” becoming her third.
