Fighting fans around the world were shocked when a fight like none other was announced. One of the most controversial fights ever imagined since McGregor vs Mayweather was scheduled on September 13. A fight between super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez and an undefeated Terence “Bud” Crawford would sell out every arena in the world.
Both competitors have their fair share of victories in the squared circle where Canelo holds a record of 63 wins, two losses, and two draws. 39 of those wins came by way of knockout. Needless to say, Canelo is the fighting pride of Mexico.
Crawford’s record, on the other hand, is a perfect one. Crawford entered this fight with 41 wins, no losses, and 31 of those wins came by way of knockout. Crawford became the first male boxer to be the undisputed champion in three weight classes (light welterweight, welterweight, and super middleweight). He has defeated some of the games biggest names like Errol Spence Jr, Shawn Porter, and Ricky Burns.
Canelo is no stranger to the spotlight; he became a household name when he took the former 44-0 undisputed champion, Floyd Mayweather to his absolute limit. Alvarez was given the utmost respect and recognition from that fight, even though he took a heartbreaking loss. However, this wouldn’t stop Canelo from defeating the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Daniel Jacobs, and Miguel Cotto.
One of the biggest fights of all time has to take place at one of the most expensive and well known stadiums across the US. Live in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium. Home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, this stadium is worth from 1.7 billion to 2 billion dollars. The stadium can hold a whopping 65,000 people, or for certain special events the arena can be expanded to hold 71, 835 people. This event, to nobody’s surprise, was sold out immediately.
Fast forward to September 13, it’s fight day and the fight world has come to bask in the glory of this momentous fight that could change the course of boxing history forever. Coming into the fight, Terence Crawford was a plus 140 underdog, which is one of the first times in his career that he hasn’t been favored to win a fight.
Allegiant stadium was packed and some very famous people were in attendance for this fight. Names like Mark Wahlberg, Mike Tyson, Mr Beast, Dave Chappelle, Wiz Khalifa, and Lizzo are just a few to name. There were ten fights on this card and the main event, obviously, was the most awaited fight ever. The event started at 4:30p.m. Canelo and Crawford did not fight until 11p.m. Even before the opening bell rang, Vegas erupted. Terence Crawford was seen walking to the ring with the familiar sounds of “Cancion del Marachi”, which is also the walkout song to the UFC Lightweight champion Ilia “El Matador” Topuria. This may have been a reference to his undefeated record that Ilia Topuria also has in the UFC.
The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds in three minute quadrants. The opening bell rang around 11:16p.m. The fighters went all out and delivered one of the most exciting 12 rounds in boxing history. In the end one man was left standing. The scores were announced 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 for the winner via unanimous decision…Terence “Bud” Crawford. The win shocked the world and left the fighting world speechless. A spectacle that will live forever in infamy.
