Every Thanksgiving many look forward to a feast like no other. The dining room table is filled from end to end with savory bites and sweet treats. In the weeks leading up, this time to relax with your family is looked forward to by students and teachers alike in Bellefonte Area High School. When you’re caught up in all the festivities it is hard to imagine this day without them, even though many do. In the spirit of giving, food banks and shelters in our community work to provide people with these meals.
There are several foodbanks in our county including the FaithCentre Food Bank, Centre Hall Potter Township Food Pantry, Food Bank of the State College Area, Howard Area Food Pantry, Philipsburg Community Action Food Pantry, and more.
Just downtown, the Knights of Columbus are advertising their free Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving day from 11am-2pm. They will be offering Roasted Turkey, Glazed Ham, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Stuffing, Green Beans, Sweet Potatoes, Corn, Cranberry Sauce, Rolls, and Pie. Reservations are not required and you may do take-out if preferred. The Knights will also be collecting Toys for Tots at the meal.
Up in State College, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 208 W. Foster Ave., will also be hosting a Thanksgiving meal day of. It is from noon to 2pm, and walk-ins are always welcome.
Although anything is appreciated to these food banks, it is suggested you donate easily preserved food like cheese, condiments, pancake mix, and ready-to-eat soup. Paper and cleaning products are also welcome.
Many of the homeless shelters in our area, like emergency help, domestic violence shelters, and walk-in centers, work directly with these foodbanks. A donation to the foodbanks will help a variety of people stay fed this Thanksgiving.
By checking out Centre County Government you can choose what food banks and shelters you’d like to donate to and help! Give thanks for your blessings while being someone else’s own blessing this season.
