As the Chief Editor of the Red & White newspaper for the last year, he has led our team through a difficult year of introducing many new members to the staff. At the same time, he balanced his senior activities including Drama Club and Choir. With his unwavering patience, and gritty work ethic, Charles “Bennie” Grieb proved he wouldn’t give up on the Red & White.
What made this year different than most for the school paper, was the unfortunate loss of our leading administrator, Mrs. Jennifer Lloyd, but our fortunate gain of Mrs. Jennifer Benson in her place. This left Bennie as the most experienced member of the staff.
“Bennie was my saving grace for this year,” Journalism teacher Mrs. Benson said. With it being her first year at Bellefonte, and first time teaching a Journalism class, she had no knowledge of the protocols for such a class. This left Bennie to step up to the plate as a leader.
“He handled his role with dignity, compassion, and maturity,” Mrs. Benson said. He took on a load of work that many would have shunned away from.
“Bennie is a good role model to others showing kindness, control, and leadership, ” junior Rorie Roan said, the newspaper Website Manager. It being Rorie’s second year on the paper, she was impressed by Bennie’s ability to manage the busy paper, and still listen to anyone’s needs in class.
“Bennie was a great role model and really helped me when I had trouble getting my words together for my articles– he helped me find my voice,” Adam Boyer said, a freshman and first year reporter on the Red and White. Just as Rorie explained, Bennie was always able to listen to Adam’s needs in class, with patience.
“He definitely set a good example for the underclassmen,” Rorie said. Having a Chief Editor who not only helps the staff through the present year, but also prepares them for the next year of writing when they are gone and a new Chief is instated.
Although the Red & White is sad knowing they will have to work through next year’s chaos without Bennie, we are even more excited to see what he will do after high school.
“He is such a skilled writer, leader, and teammate and we all are sad to see him go,” Mrs. Benson said. As a member of the Drama Club and Choir, and a stand out student on top of the newspaper, Bennie has shown an incredible work ethic throughout high school. Because of this, we all know he will thrive while pursuing a degree in nursing at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Bennie, the Red & White can not thank you enough for your dedication and hard work ethic, which I hope to carry on as the new Chief Editor.
