Interactive robots, sparkling slime, groovy lava lamps, 3-d doodlers, and a star lit planetarium captivated the future generation of creators. STEAM Night provided an amazing opportunity to connect educators, universities, companies, clubs, parents and youth.
Coordinated by BAHS staff: STEAM instructional coach, Miss. Allison D’Ambrosia, science teacher, Mrs. Drew Eddinger, as well as Penn State’s Office of Science Outreach Representative, Carol-Beth Book–STEAM Night was a free event that hosted fun and creative activities. This event helped younger students get incorporated into Science and Engineering and expand their knowledge on important topics. Additionally, every child that attended STEAM Night walked away with a free book thanks to Miss. D’Ambrosia, who put together a collection of STEM themed books.
“I think this is an awesome opportunity for our younger students to experience all of the awesome things that science and engineering have to offer. I also love that parents get to watch their kids learn and get excited about science,” Mrs. Eddinger said.
There were many groups and businesses that were in attendance at STEAM Night some of the most notable were Discovery Space, Nittany Robotics Club LLC, and Fluxspace. All together there were over 30 groups present. They each had their own unique activities ranging from a slime lab to an inflatable planetarium to learn about constellations and planets.
At the event there were over 350 people in attendance. That was a 10% increase from last year.
“I understand that we’re never going to draw a crowd of high school students into this event, so every year I recruit a group of my most trusted science students to help host activities for the evening,” said Mrs. Eddinger
“Rory Pelipesky, Jamesyn Kelleher, and Hailey Vinnedge have all been a huge help for all 3 years that I’ve been helping to coordinate the event,” Mrs. Eddinger explained . There seemed to be an amazing turnout this year and hopefully next year will be even bigger
Overall STEAM Night was a terrific event that both made learning and experimenting fun while also uniting both educators and families in the community.
