“The game” between the Buckeyes and Wolverines is the biggest rivalry in college football. This game is between ,debatably the two best college football teams of all time, Ohio State and Michigan. This matchup originated from the Toledo War over the Toledo Strip in 1835.
The favored team to win “the game” was Michigan, but this was a once never seen before matchup. Since Michigan has won the last five years in a row, the Buckeyes were out of the conversation and were doubted.
Many players and coaches don’t think of the matchup as an ordinary game. For many people it is known as “the game” because of the rivalry between the two teams and how it started.
The rivalry started in 1897 when the two teams played for the first time. Over time the competition became more tense while the two teams became more well known and stronger. Many fans that watch “the game” have learned to support one team through their whole life.
One reason the rivalry is so deep is because of how much both teams have succeeded. Ohio State and Michigan have both won many championships. The rivalry runs so deep that Ohio State fans won’t even say the letter M the week of the game.
Physical Education and health teacher Mr. Allan Miller has watched college football for a while and is big in rivalry games with Ohio State and Michigan being close to the top.
“I felt, though highly doubted, that Michigan had a shot based on previous success against Ohio State in recent years,” Mr. Miller said, “Not to mention they were playing the game in Ann Arbor, MI. Rivalry games can always go either way. Ohio State, no doubt. Pre-game ranking is an easy answer to this question. Statistically, both offensively and defensively Ohio State was and proved to be the better football team.”
This game means more to the teams than a championship. It stands for school pride, tradition, and history. This game will create history every year and many years to come.
