March Madness is the biggest basketball tournament in the country. Teams from all over the country compete for the title of national champion. The 68 team bracket is spread out through the whole month of March.
Many people that watch March Madness make their own brackets of winners and losers, but there has never been a perfect bracket. “The odds of having a perfect bracket are 1 in 9.2 quintillion,” according to ESPN.These odds make it nearly impossible to predict the entire tournament. The tournament began in 1939 and adopted the name “March Madness” in 1982.
Since 1982, the tournament has been one of the most watched basketball events in the world. The opening weekend for Men’s March Madness has brought in more viewers than the average NBA playoff game. During this year’s finals 18.3 million people watched the game on average, and the number of viewers peaked at 20.4 million. People watched as Michigan clutched the win against UConn 69-63.
“I selected Duke to win the tournament this year. I considered picking Florida or Michigan but made a gut decision to go with the Blue Devils,” said Mr. Miller.
There were many surprising wins and losses this year. Most notably, Iowa beat Florida 73-72, UConn defeated Duke 73-72, and Texas upset Gonzaga 74-68. “High Point beating Wisconsin,” was Mr. Miller’s pick, the score was 73-64.
“Well, there goes my bracket”, was my first thought. After some time though, “What a game! What an ending!”said Mr. Miller
This year the Michigan Wolverines won the tournament. They defeated the UConn Huskies 69-63. A notable performance was by Elliot Cadeau, he was the games Most Outstanding Player. He led with 19 points and dominated the opposing team, according to IndyStar.
In the end, March Madness never disappoints to display great games and keep the fans engaged with the tournament. These traits make it a great basketball tradition.
