“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, written by the well known child author Dr. Theodor Seuss went from a children’s book to a classic Christmas movie. Over the years there have been new iterations of The Grinch. Three of them to be exact, and with three of them raises debate on which one is the best. To help you decide what Grinch movie to watch this Christmas, here is a short review on each movie.
The first movie that will be reviewed is the “original” Grinch movie, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” produced in 1966. The film is the first televised adaptation of the original book by Dr. Seuss, and features art from the book’s pages, as well as unique frames drawn by the producer, Chuck Jones. The film gives a whimsical yet uncanny tone, fabricated by the humbuzz in the background of the voice recordings, the horrifying facial expressions, and the very stiff movements. Overall, this one earns a 2/10.
Secondly, the Jim Carrey movie that was released in 2000. The comedic influence that this movie had on the Christmas season was prestigious in the film industry. All christmas movies made after it had based their humorous behavior off of this one. However, in terms of design, the make-up mask displayed on Jim Carrey’s face was no less than disturbing. It gave kids nightmares, and parents an uncomfortable feeling. Despite this, the movie still turned out great in our opinion. This one will be rated 7/10.
The animated movie in 2018 is one of the best. Tyler the Creator sang the soundtrack, and added that original aspect for his spooky identity, yet modernized the story just enough to remove the uncanny tone. The 3D animated style is much easier on the eyes for the younger audiences, and — pushing aside the blinding aspect of nostalgia — gave everyone a much more Christmassy vibe. I would give it a perfect 10, but the encounter between Cindy Lou and the Grinch was much kinder and less realistic than the other two movies, so one point will be deducted and the rating rests at a 9/10.
All movies have their unique qualities that might be enjoyable for some people and unpleasant for others. In conclusion — in terms of overall enjoyment, at least — the animated movie wins first place. However, when it comes to the comedic effect, the Jim Carrey movie wins.
