In a collaboration with Penn State’s Student Programming Association (SPA), indie and R&B artist Malcolm Todd performed at the Bryce Jordan Center (BJC) on March 24. He featured the band Laundry Day as his opener.
Malcolm Todd first blew up in 2023, following his single “Art House,” and would then go on to release the mix-tape Sweet Boy. In 2025, he released his official debut album titled Malcolm Todd. With the leading single, “Chest Pain (I Love),” catapulting his album to Billboard’s top 200, and the song itself to Billboard’s top 100.
On the other hand, Laundry Day is a pop band that got their breakthrough with their debut album Trumpet Boy in 2018. Since then, the group performed as openers for many other famous artists, such as Tyler the Creator and Clario in 2019. They are no strangers to opening for Malcolm Todd, as in 2025 they opened for Malcolm’s The Whole Rockstar Tour Part 2. Both Laundry Day and Malcolm Todd would both go viral on TikTok and Instagram for their catchy songs.
Penn State’s SPA is a student-run organization with one goal: “to provide diverse activities, programming, and resources at Penn State,” according to their website. SPA has proven to get upcoming and popular artists alike to perform on campus, such as American rapper Flo Rida, Big Time Rush, and even GloRilla in early 2025.
By 7:00 p.m, the gates to enter the BJC were crowded as hundreds of people waited to enter the venue. By 8:00 that night, Laundry Day would take center stage, performing some of their most famous songs, such as “SUPERMODEL,” “I KINDA LIKE THAT,” “JANE,” and ending their act with their first poem ever written: “FRIENDS.”
30 minutes afterwards, Malcolm Todd and his band would appear to the warmed-up crowd, with Malcolm’s first song being his second most popular: “Earrings.” He then continued his repertoire, going through famous songs such as “Walk to Class,” and “Breathe.”
Malcolm also used this concert as an opportunity to play some of his older songs one last time before his new album. “Concrete,” a song written for his sister, was one of these songs chosen. Additionally, both Laundry Day and Malcolm Todd played fun cover songs, with Laundry Day doing their version of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” and Malcolm Todd singing “Leave It All To Me,” better known as the theme song to iCarly.
At the end of the day, both the attendees and performers had the time of their lives, with Malcolm leaving the crowd with one final message: “This is the start of your new life…love each other, because love is all we have”.
