Following the retirement of former history teacher, Mr. Edward Fitzgerald III, students at Bellefonte High were left with one question: “Who would teach government?”
It wouldn’t be until schedules came out that students would know Mrs. Kyra Geiger, the new history and government teacher here at Bellefonte.
Mrs. Geiger, a former student teacher of BHS, became an official staff member this year, and was met with a warm welcome back.
“I have had no shortage of people checking in, making sure I’m doing okay, and offering up help and advice. It is a very supportive environment,” Mrs. Geiger said, “I feel really lucky to get the chance to work here.”
During her time as a student teacher, Mrs. Geiger would accompany Psychology and social studies teacher Mrs. Christine Morris. While she was sad to leave, Mrs. Geiger was happy to return to the building only after a year.
“I loved my time here, and I always hoped I would get a chance to come back…it ended up being sort of serendipitous that a Government position opened up after I spent a year teaching Government at a different school,” she said.
Yet, despite being a teacher now, Mrs. Geiger originally wanted to be a Social Worker. With a Psychology degree, Mrs. Geiger pursued work in dealing with mental health needs, yet, eventually switched to teaching–a choice that she would love later on.
“If you would have told me when I was in high school that I would voluntarily be going back every day, I would have laughed,” she said, “…while I loved working in mental health, being a teacher is where I belong…I get to be creative, work with the greatest kids, and try my best to make a difference. I love being a teacher, and I’m glad I found my way onto this path.”
Senior Julia Weiser, a student of Mrs. Geiger, looks forward to her government class every day, and always loves to see Mrs. Geiger
“She’s kind, sweet, and amazing to talk to! Mrs. Geiger isn’t afraid to listen to you rant about stress from other classes and gives you great advice on what to do next!” Julia said.
Bellefonte High is glad to have Mrs. Geiger back in the building, and Mrs. Geiger is so thankful for the warm welcome back.
“Thank you to the staff, faculty, and students for already making this experience so great!”
