From ghosts to ghouls to doors that slam on their own, every house has its own spooky story. “Scariest House in America” is a show that provides recorded evidence of spirits inside homes. Every year, people all over the US try to win the award of Most Haunted House. This season, their winner is a woman just down the hall from us: Ms. Katherine “Mo” Momenzadeh, an English and AP Literature teacher.
“Scariest House in America” is a competition hosted by Retta, who explores haunted, but not abandoned, houses in America, and ranks them on least to most scary.
“It was cool meeting the comedian who hosted the show. They were fun and well-oiled, and made sure everyone was comfortable and told us what to expect,” Ms. Mo said.
The winner gets a prize of a home renovation, to hopefully make their ghostly presence seem a little less daunting. HGTV, the channel that sponsors and airs “Scariest House in America”, unexpectedly reached out to Ms. Mo. They asked if she’d like to be on the show, and she enthusiastically agreed.
“They’d been following the house on Zillow, and [they] contacted our realtor,” Ms. Mo said.
The Gatehouse has also been featured on Old House Dreams.
“Situated on Howard Street, at the main entrance of the significant Union Cemetery, some historians believe this building once served as a law office for Andrew Gregg Curtin, and that it may have been moved from the Crider Exchange Block on North Allegheny Street to its current location,” Old House Dreams said. Given those facts, the house’s age is estimated to be around 200 years old.
After winning the competition, Ms. Mo got the extraordinary opportunity to have her house renovated. However, this information has not yet gone public.
“I wanna see how I was edited, I was hoping I didn’t look bad!” Ms. Mo said. Make sure you check in on the release date to see how it turns out!
